Until a few decades back, the Patuas used to go from village to village, singing and showing the scrolls in return for alms. Along the years, many patuas started giving up painting. An interesting initiative of reviving performing folk art forms as means of sustainable livelihood is supporting the Patuas. More than 300 folk artists are participating in this process of innovation.
