Everyone works, down to the youngest. Madame Jean Louis shells dried "pwa nwa" - black beans - which can be mixed with rice (American, donated and resold locally) to feed her family. Or, it can make "sos pwa" - served over rice or corn meal mush. Cooking oil, onions, tomatoes, seasonings and anything else for a sauce are pretty much luxury items. Our rural mountain zone. some 25 miles from the capital and straight up for 2 hours, received on helicopter drop with cooking oil, flour and rice after the earthquake - in mid June. Madame Jean Louis got a large coffee size tin of rice, and that's about all. Folks get by.
